JBR and Bluewaters: beachfront concrete that lives in salt

At JBR and Bluewaters the sea is the neighbour. Below ground it is in the soil, above ground it arrives as spray, and both decide what goes into the mix.

Two exposures on one building

Bluewaters is reclaimed, and the JBR beachfront sits on ground with saline water close to the surface. Piles, pile caps and basement walls face chlorides and sulphates from the groundwater, so they take piling and substructure mixes on a GGBS blend at a low water/cement ratio.

The second exposure is airborne. Salt spray settles on podium edges, balconies and exposed columns facing the beach. Your consultant may raise the exposure class or cover on those elements, and the superstructure mix is then designed to that requirement rather than to a generic frame grade.

Pile caps here deserve particular attention. They sit at the waterline zone where wetting and drying concentrate salts, which is often the most aggressive position on the whole structure.

Retail podiums and hotel works

Much of the work here is podium-level: retail units, terraces, hotel extensions and refurbishment. These pours are often small and spread across a working site that stays open to the public. Fibre-reinforced concrete suits terrace slabs and toppings where early cracking would show, and screed handles internal levelling before finishes.

Boom pumps from 43 m to 57 m cover most podium decks from the street. Where a truck cannot stand close, a longer boom or a line pump becomes the plan, and that decision needs a site visit or a clear drawing.

Access along The Walk

Al Mamsha Street and Sheikh Zayed Road are the routes in. The Al Quoz plant is about 11 km in a straight line, with traffic at peak hours lengthening the trip, so the retarder dose follows the travel time. Building management and the developer set delivery windows and truck stands on this stretch. Check with them before fixing a pour, especially for the night slots that summer placing-temperature limits usually require.

Questions from JBR and Bluewaters sites

Does salt spray change the mix for above-ground concrete?
It can. On elements facing the sea, the consultant may specify a higher exposure class or more cover, and we design the superstructure mix to match.
Which pump fits a podium pour at JBR?
Most podium decks are within reach of our 43 m to 57 m booms. Send the drawing and truck position so we can confirm.
